The people listed below are, or were, the last surviving members of notable groups of World War II veterans, as identified by reliable sources. About 70 million people fought in World War II between 1939 and 1945.[1]

  8. Dönitz, an Admiral, was the last surviving five star officer of Nazi Germany. The last surviving Army Generalfeldmarschall was Ferdinand Schörner (1892-1973). The last surviving Luftwaffe Generalfeldmarschall was Erhard Milch (1892-1972).
  9. Eisenhower was the last surviving General of the Army. Omar Bradley (1893–1981) was promoted to the rank after the war, in 1950. The last surviving Fleet Admiral was Chester Nimitz (1885–1966).
  10. Freeman was an enlisted soldier. The last surviving commissioned officer of Easy Company was Edward Shames (1922–2021).[65]
  11. Główczewski was the last surviving pilot of the Polish RAF squadrons. The last surviving squadron commander was Franciszek Kornicki (1916–2017).[74] The last surviving Polish pilot who fought in the Battle of Britain was Tadeusz Sawicz (1914–2011).[75]
