Ethnic groups can differ greatly in appearance, dress codes, cultural practices, and religious beliefs. Nevertheless, language or speech style is often regarded as one of the most distinct and clear markers of ethnic identity. For instance, the Welsh and the English in the UK are most distinctive in terms of their accent and language. Speech style, then, is an important and often central stereotypical or normative property of group membership.
