The 2016–17 Detroit Red Wings season was the 91st season for the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise that was established on September 25, 1926.[1] It was the Red Wings' final season at Joe Louis Arena before their move to Little Caesars Arena for the 2017–18 season. This season also marked the end of the Red Wings playoff streak at 25 consecutive seasons, and was their first losing season since 1990–91. The longest active streak in Major North American sports now belonged to the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA who made the playoffs every year since 1998 until 2020. Meanwhile the Pittsburgh Penguins now owned the longest active playoff streak in the NHL.
