134th football season of Mohun Bagan


The 2023–24 Mohun Bagan Super Giant season was the club's 4th season in Indian Super League and 134th season since its establishment in 1889. The principle team owner, Sanjeev Goenka, announced after winning the 2023 Indian Super League Final that ATK Mohun Bagan will be rebranded as Mohun Bagan Super Giant from this season.[1]

Quick Facts season, Head coach ...

On 3 May 2023 Mohun Bagan confirmed 2023-24 AFC Cup preliminary round slot after a 3–1 win via penalties over Hyderabad FC [2] The season formally began on 5 July 2023, with 2023 Calcutta Premier Division, wherein the club fielded a squad of players from the senior team and the youth teams. On 3 September 2023 Mohun Bagan won their 17th Durand Cup title after defeating their arch rivals Emami East Bengal FC 1-0 in the final.

On 15 April 2024 Mohun Bagan became champions by winning their first ISL Shield, overall 6th League trophy after defeating Mumbai City FC 2-1 and finishing the league with 48 points, though they couldn't finish the domestic treble winning the ISL Cup by losing to Mumbai City in the ISL final.

1 June, the club was officially renamed as Mohun Bagan Super Giant.[3]

13 June, Juan Ferrando's term extension got officially announced.[4]

16 June, former head coach of the team Antonio López Habas joins the club as the technical director.[5]

23 June, the club announced their squad for the 2023 CFL Premier Division campaign. The club decided to field a secondary squad combined with a number of academy and youth team players under Bastob Roy and captained by senior team player Sumit Rathi.[6] Mohun Bagan also officially announced the first signing of the season, Anirudh Thapa.[7]

25 June, the club made the announcement of their first foreign signing, Armando Sadiku.[8]

28 June, the announcement for the marquee signing of the season, Jason Cummings, was made.[9]

July

3 July, the new crest for the team was revealed.[10]

5 July, the team began its CFL campaign against Pathachakra at Bankimanjali Stadium, which ended with 3–1 win.[11]

9 July, Anwar Ali's signing on loan from Delhi FC was made official.[12]

12 July, the team registered their second win after beating Tollygunge Agragami FC by 1–5 with a hattrick from Lalrinliana Hnamte.[13]

14 July, the departure of the team's captain Pritam Kotal, after a combined 130+ appearances for the club throughout the career, and the arrival of Sahal Abdul Samad through a swap deal was announced.[14][15]

16 July, the winning run in the CFL continued with a win against Dalhousie AC with a hattrick from Suhail Bhat.[16]

25 July, the new home kit for the season was presented by the team chairman Sanjiv Goenka along with two of the new signings, Thapa and Cummings, at RPSG House.[17]

26 July, Mohun Bagan's winning run came to an end after a draw against Kalighat Milan Sangha FC.[18] During the half-time break, the club presented three of their new signings— Cummings, Sadiku and Thapa.[19] This was the first time in Indian football where a public presentation of a signing was done by any club.[20]

28 July, the club officially announced the departure of Carl McHugh after a mutual termination of the contract.[21] The team won their fourth game in CFL against Calcutta CFC by 4–1.[22]

August

1 August, Indian U-23 team head coach Clifford Miranda joined the club as the assistant coach while Bastob Roy was permanently appointed as the youth team coach.[23]

2 August, Spanish defender Héctor Yuste was signed as a free agent.[24]

3 August, Mohun Bagan began their 2023 Durand Cup campaign against Bangladesh Army with a secondary squad under Roy and captained by Rathi. The match ended with a 5–0 win.

5 August, Mohun Bagan continued its dominance in CFL against United SC with their first clean sheet in the league.

7 August, the club started most of their regular first team players including two foreigners, with newly selected team's first captain Subhasish Bose, against Punjab FC. This is the first match of the season with Ferrando in the sidelines, which they won by 2–0.

10 August, Mohun Bagan secured a 5–0 win over FCI(EZ) FC in CFL.

12 August, Mohun Bagan faced their local rivals in the season's first Kolkata Derby and lost by a solitary goal. After more than four years, the club lost the Derby against East Bengal FC.

15 August, the team drew against Army Red in CFL.

16 August, Mohun Bagan won the preliminary round 2 in the AFC Cup against Machhindra FC by 3–1 to qualify for the South Asian play-off round.

27 August, Mohun Bagan defeated Mumbai City FC for the first time in Durand Cup quarter-final with a scoreline by 3–1 to qualify for the semi-final against FC Goa.
