Aliabad-e Katul (Persian: علیآباد كتول, also Romanized as ‘Alīābād-e Katūl, Aliabad-e Katool, and Aliâbâd Katool; also known simply as Aliabad (Persian: علیآباد, also Romanized as ‘Alīābād)[3] is a city in the Central District of Aliabad County, Golestan province, Iran, serving as capital of both the county and the district.[4]
At the 2006 National Census, its population was 46,183 in 11,676 households.[5] The following census in 2011 counted 49,804 people in 14,377 households.[6] The latest census in 2016 showed a population of 52,838 people in 16,655 households.[2]
The city is on a hillside of the Alborz Mountains between Gorgan and Azad Shahr. The Kaboud-val waterfall is near the city. Nearby are the villages of Kholin Darreh, Chinou, Alestan, and Mayan.
The people of Aliabad speak a dialect of Mazanderani language called Katoli.[7]
