Creation ex materia
Expression of a thesis first argued by Parmenides
Creation ex materia refers to the notion that the universe was formed out of eternal, pre-existing matter. This is in contrast to the notion of creation ex nihilo, where the universe is created out of nothing. The idea of creation ex materia is already found in ancient near eastern cosmology.[1]
In the 5th century BC, Parmenides framed this principle as the philosophical dictum nothing comes from nothing (Greek: οὐδὲν ἐξ οὐδενός; Latin: ex nihilo nihil fit). It is associated with early Greek cosmology, such as is in the works of Homer and Hesiod.
One concept of creation ex materia is creation ex deo, meaning creation from God, which would involve God creating from its own substance, as in Panentheism (if partial) and Pandeism (if complete).[2]
