Description |
Drawn by Chalon in 1822; the lady (wearing a shawl) is giving directions on the making of her new bonnet, while her husband is ogling the shopgirls (who are wearing black aprons). Despite the move away from the clinging quasi-Grecian styles to a more stiffened conical silhouette, the seated woman isn't wearing so many layers of petticoats that she can't grip her bonnetmaker's dummy firmly between her knees.
