Il complesso della Santissima Trinità è tra i più importanti siti monumentali di Venosa, il cui interesse si deve al fatto che nell' abbazia contiene la stratificazione di tracce ereditate principalmente da Romani, Longobardi e Normanni.
E' riconosciuto monumento nazionale con regio decreto dal 20 novembre 1897 La struttura si compone della chiesa antica (o chiesa vecchia), a cui dà accesso l'entrata principale, e della chiesa Incompiuta (o chiesa Nuova). La chiesa antica (o chiesa vecchia), risalente all'epoca paleocristiana, modificata e restaurata dai Longobardi e dai Normanni, ospita la tomba degli Altavilla e della moglie ripudiata di Roberto il Guiscardo, Aberada. La chiesa nuova (o chiesa incompiuta) fu iniziata tra l' XI e il XII secolo per ampliare quella antica, sfruttando i materiali sottratti all'anfiteatro romano, ma la sua edificazione non fu mai portata a termine.
