Das Gebäude im Windsor-Stil (veralteter Nachläufer des romantischen Historismus) wurde ab 1865 nach Plänen des Obersten des Geniestabs Karl Pilhal und des Majors Karl Markl errichtet und am 17. August 1870 als Kronprinz-Rudolph-Kaserne der Benützung übergeben. Als „Defensivkaserne" hat sie einen festungsartigen Charakter. Errichtet wurde sie auf einem 43.293 Quadratmeter großen Grundstück mit einer Länge von 270 Meter und einer Breite von 140 Meter. An der Außenfront gibt es rund 1.300 Fenster. |
