Summary

Description
English: In 1933, the National Economy and Savings Association decided to construct an exhibition building for displaying national products and organized an international contest for possible projects. A Turkish architect was awarded with the project. The work of Şevki Balmumcu was very unique; it was specifically designed for exhibitions. The young architect said the following regarding his work:

“A visitor does not walk in right angles while touring an exhibition. Thus, I designed an oval hall.”(2)
The Exhibition House of Ankara was inaugurated on October 29, 1934, during the 11th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic. Its inauguration was marked by an important event: The Industry Exhibition which stayed open for three weeks. 90 thousand people visited the exhibition.

Atatürk Bulvarı, Sergi Evi, 1934.

1929’da kurulan Millî İktisat ve Tasarruf Cemiyeti, “Halkı israfla mücadeleye, hesaplı, tutumlu yaşamaya ve tasarrufa alıştırmak; yerli mallarını tanıtmak, sevdirmek ve kullandırmak; yerli mallarımızın miktarını yükseltmeye, metanet ve zarafet itibariyle hariçteki mümasili mallar derecesine getirmeğe ve fiyatlarını ucuzlatmağa çalışmak; yerli mallarımızın sürümünü arttırmak” amacıyla çalışıyordu. (1)
Ankara’nın Sergievi, Cumhuriyet’in 11. yıldönümünde, 29 Ekim 1934 günü açıldı. Açılışında önemli bir etkinlik vardı: Sanayi Sergisi. Üç hafta açık kaldı. 90 bin kişi gezdi.
