English: Battle Scene . Pen and ink and brush, grey wash, 28.6 × 44.1 cm , Kunstmuseum Basel . This is the central section of a drawing, trimmed from a larger composition. An adapted copy by another hand , extending further to the right and left, is in the Albertina, Vienna . Holbein has applied wash to the figures in the middle, leaving those on the left sketchy. The battle depicted is not known, but a soldier on the right wears the cross of St Andrew, identifying him as a landsknecht , a German mercenary pikeman (Müller, 320–22).
