Summary
Description Cahermacnaghten O Davoren Law School Burren County Clare 1997 09 02.jpg |
Burren, Cty. Clare, Ireland
English:
Ruins of a stone fort that was used by the 17th-century law school of Donal O'Davoren. A close signpost reads:
This stone fort may have been built sometime in the Early Christian period. In the 17th century it was the home of the O'Davoren Law School where the famous genealogist Duald Mac Firbis studied under Donal O'Davoren. Known as O'Davoren's Town in 1675, it consisted then of a large house and a kitchen inside the walls as well as a 'house of the churchyard' and gardens outside.
(Comment: It appears to be improbable that Duald Mac Firbis studied at this school under Donal O'Davoren, see James F. Kenney:
The Sources for the Early History of Ireland: Ecclesiastical
, p. 35.)
