Summary
Description Cavendish Street, Keighley.jpg |
English:
Once upon a time, Cavendish Street was merely a narrow footpath cutting across an old town field, which was widened and redeveloped in the late 19th century. It eventually became a grand Victorian shopping street, the facades of which were intended to impress visitors as they arrived from the new Keighley train station, opened in 1883. At this time, the town was one of the busiest and wealthiest in Yorkshire. All of the new buildings were ornate and worthy of a town of such wealth and prestige as a result of its industrial might, and reflect the strong sense of civic pride that had developed in the area.
