Historical coat of arms of Hungary, drawn after a 19th-century representation.
The design first appears in the 14th century, the crown is added in the 15th century. It sees only occasional use besides other variants during the late medieval to Renaissance period (15th to 16th century examples: see 1 , 2 ). This design entered regular use in the 18th century, under Maria Theresa.

in Hungary, and also in the US, according to
