Demetrios_I_Baktria_Tetradrachm_200-185_BC.jpg

Summary

Description
English: BAKTRIA, Greco-Baktrian Kingdom. Demetrios I Aniketos. Circa 200-185 BC. AR Tetradrachm (33mm, 17.00 g, 12h). Diademed and draped bust right, wearing elephant skin headdress / Herakles standing facing, crowning himself, holding club and lion skin; monogram to inner left Greek legend: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ (BASILEOS DEMETRIOU) "Of King Demetrius". Bopearachchi 1F; cf. Bopearachchi & Rahman 124 (fourrée); SNG ANS 190
The elephant-skin headdress sported by Demetrius on this remarkable series of coins serves the dual purpose of evoking Alexander the Great (who is shown wearing a similar headdress on coins of Ptolemy I) and trumpeting Demetrius' own victories in northern India, which greatly expanded the Greco-Roman realm.
