An emergency ground connection is used to hold the electric potential in overhead lines at zero, and to prevent it from being re-energised, to ensure the safety of the rescue crew. A hook (green arrow) is lifted over the overhead line with an insulated bar (yellow arrow). The hook is connected with a wire (red arrow) and a connection block (blue arrow) to a rail.

{{en|In this picture, a tram is derailed after hitting a bus that had collided with another bus. Despite the accident looking serious, only six people were injured. On the left side of the picture, part of an ambulance can be seen. On the right side, part of a battalion chief's car and a rescue unit. The damaged tram is already connected to another tram so that it can be towed to the depot. A special towing car can also be used to tow trams.
