Die Landvilla in Formen der französischen und italienischen Renaissance wurde von 1882 bis 1886 nach Plänen des Architekten Carl Freiher von Hasenauer gebaut. Errichten ließ sie Kaiser Franz Josephs I. für seine Frau. Der Projektname war „Villa Waldruh“. Später erfolgte die Umbenennung nach der Hermesstatute (datiert mit 1888), die im Garten aufgestellt ist und ein Werk des Berliner Bildhauers Ernst Herter ist.
