A photograph of a funerary stele from the article "France" in the 1901-1906 The Jewish Encyclopedia , captioned "Earliest Known Inscription Relating to the Jews of France, Dated Narbonne, 689". Based on the date it would have been created in the Visigothic Kingdom . In other sources it is described as a "Christian inscription" [1] and as a Jewish inscription dated with the local calendar—the regnal year of King Egica —rather than the Hebrew calendar [2] .
