Summary

Description
English: For Jesus articles, adding Hebrew, Greek, and Latin transcriptions. The Hebrew name "Yeshua" ישוע written with the letters yod - shin - waw - `ayin of the Hebrew alphabet is found in the Hebrew of the Old Testament at Ezra 2:2, 2:6, 2:36, 2:40, 3:2, 3:8, 3:9, 3:10, 3:18, 4:3, 8:33; Nehemiah 3:19, 7:7, 7:11, 7:39, 7:43, 8:7, 8:17, 9:4, 9:5, 11:26, 12:1, 12:7, 12:8, 12:10, 12:24, 12:26; 1 Chronicles 24:11; and 2 Chronicles 31:15 (and also in Aramaic at Ezra 5:2). This is a shortened post-Exilic version of the name יהושע or "Joshua". For this reason, the name of Joshua son of Nun appears as ישוע (Yeshua) in Nehemiah 8:17, and as Ιησους (Iêsous or "Jesus") in the ancient Greek of Josephus and the New Testament (Acts 7:45, Hebrews 4:8), etc. Note that ca. 1600 Protestant Bible translators started to transcribe ישוע in the Old Testament into English as "Jeshua", but kept transcribing Ιησους in the New Testament into English as "Jesus", obscuring the connection between the equivalent Greek and Hebrew versions of the same name.
