Lamp-and-moon-example-2.JPG

Summary

Description
English: These two pictures of a ceiling fixture illustrate the problem of disappearing stars in photographs of lunar landscapes. The picture at right, set in uniform background and foreground light, shows that the lamp is set against a white background. But, when the light is turned on, the camera increases shutter speed and stops down the aperture, causing the white ceiling to appear pitch black. In the lunar landings, the extremely bright lunar landscape foreground required camera settings that caused the background stars to disappear in the same way the white ceiling has been transformed into an ink-black background in the photograph at left.
