Summary
Description Military Point Alcatraz 1866-1868 (model).JPG |
English:
A model of Military Point Alcatraz now on display at Alcatraz Island, showing the original Cape Cod style lighthouse and the 200 ft x 100 ft Citadel (a fortified barracks) to the left of it. Alcatraz's current lighthouse is in approximately the same position. Most of the Citadel was razed to make way for the main cell block (built 1909-12) that now stands on the site, though the Citadel's bottom floor (which was below ground level owing to the fact the building was situated in a sunken pit or "moat" to make it more difficult to attack) was incorporated into the new structure.
The accompanying plaque reads: " Military Point Alcatraz, 1866-1868 This model represents Alcatraz Island during its most heavily armed period, with 108 guns mounted. Model researched, designed and constructed by Park Ranger Rex Norman. Model not to scale" |
