Elisa Bravo Jaramillo iba en el bergantín el
Joven Daniel
, que había zarpado de Valparaíso el 23 de julio rumbo a Valdivia y que naufragó a la altura de la desembocadura del río Toltén, en la playa de Puancho, costa de Cautín, zona del lago Budi. Sucedió en la noche del 31 de julio al 1 de agosto de 1849; culparon a los mapuches de haber raptado a Elisa, que habría sobrevivido al naugragio y pasado a ser mujer del cacique Kurín o Curín. La leyenda dice que los supervivientes levantaron un campamento en la playa, pero que pronto fueron matados por los indios. Según algunos historiadores modernos, como

, Premio Nacional de Historia (Chile), en realidad, no hay pruebas de que hubiera supervivientes ni de que Elisa no hubiera perecido y estuviera efectivamente cautiva en la Araucanía (véase
