Sokolov's investigation : The whole district near this shaft, shown in photo No. 4 [Other versions], was first inspected very carefully in the presence of specially trustworthy persons (among these was a British subject, Robert Wilton to whom I granted permission to be present), then when the external investigation was complete this district was dug up and all the soil was passed through sieves and then rinsed in water. Everything was taken out of the shaft and minutely examined, passed through sieves and washed.
