Summary
Description |
Duc de Lancastre . Portrait of Henry, Duke of Lancaster (c.1310-1361), a Knight Founder of the Order of the Garter. He wears a blue Garter mantle over plate armour. The arms depicted on his surcoat appear incorrect. These are the arms of his second cousin King Edward III, who was the first to quarter the Royal Arms of France with Plantagenet, representing his claim to the French throne from his mother Isabella of France. The Earls and Duke of Lancaster bore the arms of their common ancestor King Henry III, which was the arms of Plantagenet alone, with a label of France for difference. A framed tablet displays painted arms of successors in his Garter stall at St. George's Chapel, Windsor, including: Stafford, Despencer, King of Portugal, FitzAlan, Earl of Arundel. From: Edmund Horace Fellowes: The Knights of the Garter, 1348-1939. With a complete list of the stall-plates in St. George's chapel; London, Published for the dean and canons of St. George's chapel in Windsor castle by the Society for promoting Christian knowledge, 1939. [1] Stall 3 (South 3):
