with the mesocortical pathway recolored in orange and revisions to the labels for the Nucleus accumbens, Prefrontal cortex, Dorsal Striatum*, Nigrostriatal pathway, Mesocortical pathway*, and Mesolimbic pathway* (an asterisk indicates a modified label – as opposed to an overwritten label – in this version).
Overview of reward structures in the human brain. Dopaminergic neurons are located in the midbrain structures substantia nigra (SNc) and the ventral tegmental area (VTA). Their axons project to the dorsal and ventral striatum (caudate nucleus, putamen and ventral striatum including nucleus accumbens), the dorsal and ventral prefrontal cortex, and elsewhere. Additional brain structures in the reward system include the supplementary motor area in the frontal lobe, the rhinal cortex in the temporal lobe, the pallidum and subthalamic nucleus in the basal ganglia, and others. |
