Summary

Description

So-called "Snake column" or "Serpents column" that used to be in the centre of the Hippodrome in Constantinople. Originally it had three heads and came from Delphi , one of the heads is in the Istanbul museum today. Herodotus wrote: "Having brought all the stuff together they set apart a tithe for the god of Delphi, whereof was made and dedicated that tripod that rests upon the bronze three-headed serpent" (Herodotus, The Histories, book IX, 81)
