Summary

Description
English: Signature of American writer Sylvia Plath as it appeared in the August 1953 issue of Mademoiselle magazine. In her novel The Bell Jar , Plath gave a semi-autobiographical account of her time as an editor at the magazine—including, famously, the moment her photo was taken to be printed alongside her signature.

Other versions
English: The previous version uploaded to Commons, seen below, was sourced from the cover of an uncorrected proof of The Journals of Sylvia Plath . That signature differs significantly from the one found here and may not actually be Plath's signature. Its only source is the cover image itself, taken at face value, without any external reason to interpret the handwritten version of her name as her signature—it could be, but there's not enough information. It seems just as likely that it was merely a design choice to use handwritten lettering. By comparison, the Mademoiselle signature appeared in a magazine feature highlighting young women writers with a photograph of each set beside a distinct signature, making it highly likely that this is Plath's genuine signature.
