This image of the valkyrie is far more active than the usual romantic period concepts of the type, that of a spirit who visits the battlefield of the Vikings to select only the bravest of the dead warriors for transport to Valhalla , the abode of the Gods. Norse myths do describe these spirits as armed and helmeted, however.
