Willoughby Shortland (30 September 1804 – 7 October 1869) was a British naval officer and colonial administrator.

Willoughby Shortland, R.N., Drawn for me by his niece from a portrait. Landed at Kororareka with Gov. Hobson on Jan 29th 1840, upon whose death, Sept. 10th 1842 he became Acting-Governor, retaining office until Cap. Fitzroy’s arrival in December 1843. He married the daughter of Mr R.A. Fitzgerald, Registrar of the Supreme Court. Subsequently he was appointed Governor of Nevis and then of Tobago, Returning to England he died in 1869 at Portlands Devon. His brother Sir Edward Shortland wrote several books connected with New Zealand. T.M.H.; label: David Scott, Dunedin |
