The image comes from the Counter tenor part of 4 partbooks from 1542, Bruges, Flanders. They were created for Zeghere van Male, a wealthy merchant - part of the upper middle class. They contain dutch and french songs, italian madrigals and a few instrumental pieces including dances as well as some sacred works popular in Bruges at the time. They are huge works with over 300 pages in each book and offer a unique insight into what was popular in the upper middle class at the time - and show the great diversity both in language and music. They are held at Library Municipal de Cambrai, France. |
