History

Former Jacobs Well State School

In the late 1800s, the farming district located between the Pimpama River and the Logan River called Pimpama Island encompassed the present-day localities of Jacobs Well, Norwell, Steiglitz and Woongoolba. It was referred to as an island because there were a number of lagoons and swamps that isolated the area during the wet season; however, this disadvantage made it good land for growing sugar cane.[3]

Jacob's Well State School opened in 1920. It closed on 3 May 1974. The school then became the Jacob's Well Environmental Study Centre.[4] The school was on the corner of Behms and Pimpama-Jacobs Well Roads (27.7824°S 153.3349°E / -27.7824; 153.3349 (Jacobs Well Environmental Education Centre)), now within the neighbouring suburb of Norwell to the west.[5][6][7]

Jacobs Well was once part of the Shire of Albert.[citation needed]

In the 2016 census, Jacobs Well had a population of 1,839 people.[1]

In February 2020, record levels of rainfall caused flooding in the Calypso Bay canal estate.[8]
