Koppa Town is a panchayat town in Chikkamagaluru district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is the headquarters of Koppa sub-district. The town name Koppa is derived from Kopada (anger) Veerabadra Swamy temple, a historic temple that attracts devotees across Malnad.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census,[3] Koppa town had a population 4,993. Males constituted 49.2% of the population and females 50.8%.Koppa Taluka had a population 84,882. Koppa had an average literacy rate of 86.4%, higher than the national average of 74.04%: male literacy was 88%, and female literacy was 84.8%. In Koppa, 8.9% of the population was under 6 years of age.

Koppa is connected by road to cities such as Shimoga, Chikmagalur and Udupi. The nearest railway stations are Shivamogga (74 km), Bhadravati (70 km) and Udupi (87 km).

  • Government First Grade college, Balagadi, offers UG and PG courses. It is affiliated to Kuvempu University.
  • Government Polytechnic college and Government ITI college was established on the outskirts of Koppa town.
  • Koppa has many schools and Pre-university colleges such as St Nobert, BGS, St Joseph, Government PU college etc.

Economy

Agriculture is the major occupation. Major crops include betel nut or areca, coffee, banana, paddy, and pepper. Koppa has many tea estates.
