Notes

  1. The dates for acting judges and acting judges of appeal are from the date of their first commission until the date of their last commission. The judge may not have had a commission for the entire period and may not have sat throughout that period.
    From 1918 until 1990 a judge was required to retire at age 70. Since 1990 a judge is required to retire at age 72 but may be appointed an acting judge until age 77.[1]
  2. James Sheen Dowling was the son of Chief Justice Sir James Dowling.

  13. Roper was appointed as a Judge of the Land and Valuation Court on 25 May 1937. Every six months from 1937 to 1939, he received an additional commission as an acting judge of the Supreme Court. In 1940 his appointment as a Supreme Court judge was backdated to 25 May 1937.[119]

  18. A resident judge was appointed for the Port Phillip District between 1840 and 1852 when the district became the colony of Victoria.[224]
  19. Willis was notified on 24 June 1843 that he had been amoved by Governor Gipps, however the Privy Council subsequently held that while there were sufficient grounds for his removal, he should have been given an opportunity to be heard.[225] His appointment was revoked by the Queen in August 1846.[226]
  20. A resident judge was appointed for the Moreton Bay District from 1852,[228] until the district became the colony of Queensland
