  34. Cunningham, Michael "Macstorm". "Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift - Staff Review". RPGamer. Archived from the original on 2010-03-01. Retrieved 2010-02-04. Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift is a tactical RPG for the Nintendo DS developed by Square Enix. In a pattern much akin to six degrees of separation, this latest title is a distant relation to Yasumi Matsuno's Tactics Ogre, first for the Super Famicom in Japan and then remade for the PlayStation. As Matsuno's initial turn-based tactical RPG, full of political and social intrigue, Tactics Ogre reshaped the tactical mold into something that was to be used over and over again. Upon Matsuno leaving Quest and joining Square Enix, Tactics Ogre next begat Final Fantasy Tactics, another classic tactical RPG with a heavy focus on story and solid gameplay.

  38. Cunningham, Michael. "Rondo of Swords - Impression". RPGamer. Archived from the original on 2010-01-11. Retrieved 2010-02-04. Rondo of Swords is a strategy RPG, but it is not a typical one. Rondo does away with the classic control scheme seen in Final Fantasy Tactics, Shining Force, and Fire Emblem in favor of something completely fresh. Many other tactical RPGs have taken to playing it safe with gameplay or, in the case of some, have moved to a real-time strategy focus. Rondo of Swords takes the traditional tactical RPG gameplay and does something truly innovative with the controls.
  39. PapaFrog (September 25, 2007). "Soul Nomad and the World Eaters". GamePro. Archived from the original on 2008-10-15. Retrieved 2010-02-04. The young hero of our story is, naturally, charged with saving the world. He is given a sword that has the soul of a demon god named Gig trapped inside of it, and once you touch it he merges his soul with yours, giving you the power to kill anything and everything. It's a nice twist on a tactical RPG, but I found myself wanting the game to end in five minutes because of it, because once you kill anything taking on the power of Gig, the game ends.

Unfortunately, the classification carried a great curse.

First off, this is a tactical RPG unlike the prior titles in the series, so everything takes place on a grid, but it's not a basic tactical game either. Some of the series elements that fans will expect to find are still there, but other things have changed dramatically.
  54. Fleming, Jeffrey (December 28, 2009). "Opinion: 2009 - The Last Days of the Japanese RPG?". GamaSutra. Retrieved 2010-02-04. Square-Enix brought a few original titles to the DS including one of tri-Ace's better efforts -- Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume. It's one of the most interesting SRPGs I've played in years.
