Since 1976, when the Supreme Court of the United States lifted the moratorium on capital punishment in Gregg v. Georgia, 18 women have been executed in the United States.[1] Women represent less than 1.15 percent of the 1,561 executions performed in the United States since 1976.[2]

  1. Amber McLaughlin has also been identified as Scott A. McLaughlin in the death warrant and prison records. McLaughlin transitioned from male to female while incarcerated.[20][21][22] She thus became the first transgender woman executed in the United States.[23]
