Vivek–Mervin

Vivek–Mervin is an Indian music composer duo consisting of Vivek Siva and Mervin Solomon. They are known for their work in Tamil language films. They worked together on Vadacurry (2014), Dora (2016), Pattas (2020), Sulthan (2021) Sangathamizhan (2020) and Gulaebaghavali (2018).[1]

Early life and education

Vivek underwent his schooling in Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan School in Chennai. He learnt the Carnatic mandolin from Shri U. P. Raju. He performed with a fusion band called “Zinx” in school and college. His band mates included music composer Anirudh, Leon James, Krishna Kishor and violinist MS Ananthakrishnan.

The Oscar Winner AR RAHMAN noticed “Zinx” in a band hunt and praised them. Vivek performed in numerous fusion shows, corporate gigs and public shows with the band.

Vivek did his Bachelors of Commerce and later went on to pursue a degree in law at Dr. Ambedkar Law University in Chennai.


Mervin Solomon did his schooling at Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School, Chennai.

He learnt piano since the age of three from Madras Institute of Music from D. J. Prabhakar. He completed Grade 8 in piano from Trinity College of Music, London. He was part of multiple bands through school and college. He later joined the band Zinx, where Vivek and he performed together in numerous shows. He completed Bachelors in Visual Communications from Madras Christian College, Chennai. Both of them were music producers with composer Anirudh Ravichander and worked in films such as 3, Edhir Neechal, Kathi, VIP, Vedalam, Petta, Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, Vanakkam Chennai, etc.

Vivek Siva had worked in the song mix for Kaaki Sattai, Kahthi, David, Remo.

Career

Vivek Siva trained as a classical musician and performed with numerous bands while in school. Solomon had worked as a music producer, and scored music for albums in gospel and classical genres. Vivek Siva, Solomon, and Anirudh Ravichander are from the band Zinx. Vivek and Mervin later worked as music producers and mix engineers for Anirudh Ravichander.

The songs and background score of their debut movie Vadacurry (2015) were well received. "Nenjukulla Nee" became an instant hit and topped the charts. In their second project Pugazh (2016), the duo roped in Hindi singer Arijit Singh for his first Tamil song "Neeye", which became a chartbuster. They composed music for films with stars such as Dhanush in Pattas, Karthi in Sulthan, Vijay Sethupathy in Sangathamizhan, Nayanthara in Dora, Prabhudeva in Gulaebaghavali, etc. Their own releases became chartbusters and garnered attention from all age groups. Notably songs such as "Orasaadha", "Guleba", "Chill Bro", "Jai Sulthan", etc., went viral. They released and featured in 3 independent singles in collaboration with Sony Music South. In keeping with their interest in live performance, they did public concerts, award shows, college pro shows, and YouTube One Nation Festival.[2]

  • The duo performed at KWC Star Expo Centre In Kuala Lumpur Malaysia as part of Vivek Mervin Live In Malaysia.[3]
  • The duo have performed at the Crown Music Festival in Zurich, Switzerland in October 2022.[4]
  • The duo have also scored the music “Vedigindu Pasange” - A Malaysian Tamil Film. The film’s Album was a chartbuster and won them the Best composer Award at the Cinefest Malaysian Film Awards[5]
