Add article description

This is a list of NIT bids by school (divided by their current conference affiliation). As of the 2014 tournament, 269 schools have made appearances in the tournament. The 12 schools whose names are listed in the last table are no longer in NCAA Division I Men's Basketball, and can no longer be included in the tournament.

Some schools have NIT tournament appearances under previous names. For example, UTEP was known as Texas Western when it won its NCAA title in 1966.

          Notes

          1. Before July 2018, the athletic program that currently represents Purdue Fort Wayne was operated by Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), a joint campus of the Indiana University (IU) and Purdue University systems. The two systems agreed to dissolve the joint campus after the 2017–18 school year and create two new institutions, one affiliated with IU and one affiliated with Purdue. Since the IPFW athletic program transferred in its entirety to the Purdue-affiliated school, Purdue Fort Wayne inherited all of IPFW's athletic history.
          2. Long Island University merged the athletic programs of its Brooklyn and Post campuses in July 2019. The new LIU program inherited the Division I membership of the Brooklyn campus, as the Post campus had been an NCAA Division II member. As such, all NIT appearances by teams representing the Brooklyn campus are credited to the current LIU program.
          3. UTRGV was formed by the 2015 merger of NCAA Division I member Texas–Pan American (UTPA) and NAIA member Texas–Brownsville. Because UTRGV directly inherited the UTPA athletic program, it is credited with all of UTPA's basketball history.
