The music was written by Rudolf Friml and Herbert Stothart, the lyrics by Otto Harbach and Oscar Hammerstein II,[1] In the original Broadway production in 1924, the song was performed by Dennis King and Arthur Deagon,[1] as the characters Jim Kenyon and Sergeant Malone.[2]

On three occasions the play has been made into a movie: in 1928 with Joan Crawford and James Murray; in 1936 with Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy; and in 1954 with Ann Blyth and Howard Keel. Karl Denver and David Whitfield have also recorded the song.
