Stone inscription in a Mediterranean island

The Sant'Antioco bilingual is a bilingual Latin-Punic inscription found in 1881 in Sant'Antioco, Sardinia.[1] The inscription is on a large marble block 71 x 63 cm, with a hole at the top for a statue.[1]

The inscription

It was discovered by German epigrapher Johannes Schmidt, who was working in Sardinia on behalf of Theodor Mommsen and his Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum.[1] It was found in the courtyard of the house of Giuseppe Angius.[1]

It is currently in the Museo archeologico comunale Ferruccio Barreca.[2] The Punic inscription is known as KAI 172 and CIS I 149.

    Hr. Dillmann las: Über eine neuentdeckte punische Inschrift: "Von beifolgender zweisprachiger Inschrift aus Sulci auf Sardinien hat mir Hr. Mommsen gütigst einen Graphitabzug und einen Abklatsch eingehändigt. Dieselbe ist von Hrn. Dr. Joh. Schmidt in Halle, welcher im Aufträge des Hrn. Mommsen die Insel bereist und deren inschriftliche Denkmäler aufgenommen hat, aufgefunden und abgeschrieben worden. Sie findet sich in dem alten Sulci, dem heutigen S. Antioco, im Hofe des Hauses des Hrn. Joseph Angius auf einem grossen Marmorblock von 71cm Höhe, 63cm Breite, oben mit einem Loch zum Einlassen der Bildsäule. Ohne Zweifel befindet sich derselbe noch heute an der ursprünglich ihm angewiesenen Stelle."
