Shahriyar (Persian: شهریار)[lower-alpha 1] (pronounced /sha ree YAAR/[needs IPA]), is originally a Persian male name. It is used as one of the highest titles of nobility that is equal to 'King' or 'Grand Duke'.[citation needed] The name consists of two words, "shahr" (city) and "yar/yār" (friend), leading the name to be sometimes translated as "the city of the friend".[citation needed]
