History

In a 2018 reorganization, the NEAC was placed under United Front Work Department of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.[1][2] It had previously been under the State Council.[3]:77

In 2020, a Han Chinese Chen Xiaojiang was named director of the commission, the first Han Chinese to lead the body since 1954.[4] In 2022, Pan Yue became the director. Under Pan, calls for "ethnic fusion" of all non-Han minority ethnic groups became louder.[5][6]
