Major branches of...

I'm not a planner, but logically I have a hard time believing that all types of planning currently listed in this template are in fact branches of land-use planning. Rather, it would seem that land-use planning itself was a branch of the broader field of planning. Should this template be renamed 'Planning'? Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 19:49, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

I see your point. Transportation Planning in particular is a related discipline but not a branch. I will change this. But the term "planning" alone as the template heading is broader than what the template is trying to do. Granted, professional planning organizations typically refer to themselves in terms of planning alone as in "American Planning Association" but "planning" as defined in Wikipedia encompasses a much broader spectrum of activities. Here is a thought: in the UK, where the planning profession was invented, they use the term "Town Planning" as opposed to Land Use Planning which is limited more to North America. I think most readers could live with that term.Verne Equinox (talk) 02:33, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
Generally, between the American Planning Association, Canadian Institute of Planners, Town Planning Institute and others such as the US Institute of Transportation Engineers the broad field is urban planning, a sub-discpline/practice area is land-use planning and a major branch of urban planning is transportation planning.
