Template talk:Year nav topic

@Oculi and BrownHairedGirl: the ellipses in this template link to either "Category:Subject by year" or "Category:Years in subject".

In between, the dates link to the articles "Title year-10 in subject" etc.

Some recent category changes mean that the category names no longer match the article names, e.g. 2003 in Turkey 2003 in Turkish television previously linked via this template to Category:Turkish television by year, but it does not link to the renamed Category:Television in Turkey by year.

I can't see any easy way round this. Maybe it needs an additional version of this template with two variants of the subject, e.g. to be used as {{year nav topic6|2003|Turkish television|Television in Turkey}}  ? – Fayenatic London 13:54, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

@Fayenatic, this isn't a hard one to solve, at least conceptually. It just needs the template to be a bit smarter, and look for both variants.
The template needs reworking anyway, to eliminate the pointless year parameter. I'll have a go later. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:16, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
Ooops. @Fayenatic, your example 2003 in Turkey doesn't use Template:Year nav topic5. Please can you check again which article and template you mean? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:36, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
My mistake – see correction above.
Apart from that – Great! Is there a template/module, then, that switches between country name and adjective? I found {{Demonym country}}, but that works by TLD and seems to be unused.
For reference, this year nav template currently makes red links to these former categories:
BTW {{Periods in Fooian television catnav}} will also need updating. – Fayenatic London 14:40, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

@Fayenatic, the conversion template is Template:GetCountryNameFromAdjective. Part of a series I created to convert between Name/Demonym/Adjective, but haven't properly documented. They do have some limitations, but work for most contemporary purposes.

However, before making templates more complex, may we discuss the underlying problem here? How did all these categories come to be named in a format different to their head article? And shouldn't the solution be to fix that disparity? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:54, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

Good point, and there are other differences like that, e.g. Category:Lists of magazines by country has a mix of naming formats, but none of the list names include "published" as in the sub-cats of Category:Magazines by country.
These were nominated by Oculi (e.g. ) as "C2B: per Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2020_May_15#Magazines_by_country which renamed 'Fooian television' to 'television in Foo'." – Fayenatic London 15:15, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
@Fayenatic, looking at again, I think my previous post slightly misunderstood the situation. that renaming of the "by year" categories without renaming their contents was an error.
We used to have:
Old setup
New setup
The container category is now an anomaly.
It seems to me that either:
A/ the speedy renamings should be reverted,
or
B/ The by-year-categories and articles should be renamed from nationality to country.
Note that that the YYYY-in-Fooish-television/YYY0s-in-Fooish-television set is very big, because there is also Category:1990s American television series, Category:2006 American television series endings, Category:2006 American television series debuts, Category:2006 American television seasons, etc.
It seem to me that he best way to resolve this is by reverting the renaming of the container categories, which should not have been speedied … but to do so without prejudice to a wider nomination which would switch the whole TV category tree from nationality to country.
@Oculi, your input here would be much appreciated. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:48, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

Adding an optional prefix and suffix

@Frietjes and Hmains: Can we refactor this template using {{Irregular series navigation}} to add an optional prefix and suffix to the list of years? Jarble (talk) 17:12, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
