Wikipedia:Featured lists was initiated on May 19, 2005, with the current nominations system instituted at the same time. This table gives a monthly overview of the featured list count, and compares it to that for featured articles. Monthly increases are not the same as new listings, since lists can also be demoted through the Featured list removal process. Article/list counts are those stated on the featured list page and featured article page at 0:00 UTC on the listed date. There may be (relatively) small inaccuracies in these data, as they are hand-collected.

The number of featured lists, as a proportion of the total number of articles, rose steadily since the founding of the Featured list process in May 2005 to about 0.01% at the end of 2006. From there, growth rapidly accelerated for the next 2.5 years, with the proportion reaching 0.048% by the middle of 2009, and list promotion rates reached as high as an average 2-3 per day each month in 2008, the highest rates so far. Beginning in early 2009 growth began to slow, hitting 0.055% by the end of 2010 and roughly stabilizing at 0.058% by 2013, slowly rising since then to 0.062%. Over the same time period, the proportion of featured articles has at first fallen from 0.1% to a low of 0.076% in early 2007, slowly risen to 0.09% by 2011, and fluctuated between there and 0.095% ever since. To interpret these figures, note that the total number of articles on Wikipedia rose exponentially for some time, but since about August 2006, article growth rates have slowed to be approximately linear.

While there is no official Wikipedia-wide record of lists due to their subjective nature, currently the 4,320 featured lists make up approximately 1.44% of the ~300,000 members of Category:List-Class articles, which includes any article classified as a list by a wikiproject.

Note: When comparing the featured list statistics page and the featured articles statistics page, it may appear that the two tables are a month off. They are not; this has to do with how they are set up. The featured list statistics page, like the good articles statistics page, gives a snapshot at the beginning of every month, while the featured articles statistics page gives a snapshot at the end of every month.
