Administrators, commonly known as admins, sysops (system operators) or cabalists, are Wikipedians who have certain extra tools. Unless you are a Bot, these can only be acquired through the following methods;

  1. A request for adminship (known by the acronym, "RfA")
  2. Doing really clever technical wonkery stuff on the software that runs the shop
  3. Starting the darn site in the first place
  4. Bribery. However of all four options this one is the least likely to ensure you get to keep the tools.

In short – think RfA.

RfAs run for up to seven days after being transcluded onto the main RfA page; but if they are clearly going to succeed they should be closed early. If you are reading this page it is possible that this has happened to your RfA. Alternatively, you may have been sent here by another Wikipedian, whom you approached because you wish to become an administrator, and it was blindingly obvious that you should be one already without all the tedious mucking around at RfA.

Reasons for early promotion

Although RIGHT NOW RfAs have no specific minimum requirements, in general the community looks for certain stellar levels of contributions;

When RIGHTNOW is not a good idea

RIGHTNOW RfAs may not be sensible for a few reasons, such as:

  • The candidate is obviously going to fail.
  • The candidate wants to see how far past WP:100 he/she can go.
  • The RfA is causing a lot of drama and everyone wants to keep it up.
  • If you're new, by any chance.
