Wikipedia Visiting Scholars

The National Library of Wales is looking to appoint the UK's first Wikipedia Visiting Scholar. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to improve content relating to Wales on Wikipedia (in English or Welsh). Successful applicants will be given access to Library collections, online resources and staff expertise. This is a voluntary position. Visiting scholars can work remotely and at their own pace.Jason.nlw (talk) 09:44, 1 April 2016 (UTC)

Consider tagging very short Wales-related articles, with a designated stub tag. For general Wales stubs, write this {{Wales-stub}} at the bottom of the article. (All such articles are listed in Category:Wales stubs)

Note that for some areas of Wales like Pembrokeshire there are subcategories which should be used instead.

New Proposed Wales Project

There is now a new proposed WikiProject to deal explicitly and exclusively with Wales at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Wales. Anyone who would be interested in joining should indicate as much there, to let people know whether there is enough interest in such a project to formally create it. Thank you for your attention. Pages listed on Categories for deletion

Too late, the discussion has been closed and over 400 of the articles previously in the category have been mysteriously removed. Sionk (talk) 18:31, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
Yes, apparently the proposer thinks the ability to speak Welsh is only "significant" if you are a writer. I'm now trying to populate the Politicians and Actors subcategories, but it's obvious we still need an "other". Deb (talk) 17:49, 6 September 2015 (UTC)
Ridiculously high-handed. At least a note should have been left here. Is there no appeal process? Daicaregos (talk) 10:41, 7 September 2015 (UTC)
I would suggest it be raised again at CfD, because of the poor participation and the late notification of the WikiProject Wales. CfD discussions generally have far less participation than AfD and discussions can easily get missed. Strangely (but predictably) the Category:Cornish-speaking people is also up for discussion. Sionk (talk) 20:13, 7 September 2015 (UTC)
Yes, I brought it to the requestor's attention because it seemed inconsistent, and now he's shown his ignorance of the issues by proposing it for "containerization", obviously a futile move. Deb (talk) 13:39, 8 September 2015 (UTC)
Seems that "containerization" means deletion, to all intents and purposes. Daicaregos (talk) 09:19, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
Sadly, this category has now been deleted, even though there was no consensus to do so. I have requested the deleting administrator, User:Fayenatic london, to reconsider this decision. If he will not do so, the next stage would be a deletion review. What do other project members feel about this? Deb (talk) 11:47, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
I have expanded the justification for closing, as requested, and changed the stated outcome for this category from "delete" to "merge Category:Welsh-speaking people into Category:Welsh-language occupations". I realised that this decision is liable to be challenged at DRV, but anticipate that it would follow the recent review at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2015 September 20, which endorsed deletion of Category:Welsh-speaking sportspeople. – Fayenatic London 13:49, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
Fayenatic, I doubt that the result would be quite the same. Category:Welsh-speaking sportspeople was proposed for deletion when it had only been in existence a few days, and those involved in its creation and population were not informed in time to participate. The "endorsement" was somewhat flawed, as the people who had known about it and voted for deletion were canvassed by the deleting administrator to repeat their arguments, but several uninvolved people did not agree. In the case of Category:Welsh-speaking people, you would get the same set of people either endorsing or not endorsing the decision, which would make it just as difficult to decide. That's why I don't really want to take it to a review, as it will just end up with the same arguments being repeated. Deb (talk) 14:40, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
I am not seeking to encourage a DRV, but if it happens it should not look at the same arguments, but at whether I "interpreted the consensus incorrectly", etc, see WP:DRVPURPOSE. – Fayenatic London 15:32, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
I agree, it shouldn't, but in the previous case it did. Deb (talk) 15:49, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
Intriguingly the effect was not to delete Category:Welsh-speaking people but, effectively, retain is as a containerised category under a slightly different name. In some sense that is a win-win for both sides, because those of us who believe speaking Welsh/Scottish Gaelic is not equivalent to playing the trombone can continue to categorise people by their national traits. Sionk (talk) 17:49, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
Yes, I'm coming round to that view. See the discussion at Category talk:Welsh-language occupations. Deb (talk) 09:48, 11 November 2015 (UTC)

Here we go again

And again

Pages listed on Categories for renaming

Television program(me)s

A decision's been made (see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2020 May 6#Television program(me)s) to move all categories called "XXXX television programmes" to "XXXX television shows". I argued strongly against this, since only last year I got Category:Welsh-language television programs moved to Category:Welsh-language television programmes without controversy. As a result of the decision, Category:Welsh-language television programmes will be moved to Category:Welsh-language television shows, and Category:S4C television programmes will be moved to Category:S4C television shows, etc. I don't know what others think about that. What concerns me equally is that there may be an attempt to change article wording as well, e.g. changing "Heddiw was a television news programme" to "Heddiw was a television news show". I think it's important that we all be on the lookout for that. Deb (talk) 11:44, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

Further to the above, see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2020 July 5. I would like to get the renaming reversed as an individual case. Please give your views. Deb (talk) 07:58, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

Articles that need attention

  • Ogham - references to use in Wales?
  • List of rulers of Wales - lists some "High Kings" etc who are only possibly historical figures, with precise dates for their reigns, and no sources. Update: Recent anonymous additions to the article are not accompanied by references. Deb (talk) 13:54, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
  • Gruff Rhys - Needs referencing, wikifying.
  • Cerys Matthews - Referencing, wikifying.
  • Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - general tidy up and expansion.
  • Bishop of Saint Asaph, Wales (Catholic) & Bishop of St Asaph - should they be merged?
  • Commote - Please see talk page; placenames and page name.
  • Chwilog - This needs more and better references but it's hard to find out anything more about the place.
  • International Business Wales - written by a contributor who works for IBW and contributes to no other article, it still reads too much like a promotional exercise despite some edits to make it more neutral; recent material added by IBW contributor.
  • Talk:Neil McEvoy - It would be useful for others to join this debate and help improve the article.Deb (talk) 19:59, 13 November 2019 (UTC)
  • List of Welsh films - Just came across this. Boy, does this need work! Deb (talk) 15:39, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
