Surprisingly, the Articles section does not seem to include articles on early colonial passenger ships e.g. Parmelia (barque). This should be in scope, shouldn't it? I've done my bit for this project today by turning List of Australian ports into one of my Gazetteer-based lists. The main advantage for us is that the entries now link to the location of an article on the port itself rather than the port's location. For example, the previous list contained an entry that linked to Fremantle, Western Australia; now the corresponding entry redlinks to Fremantle Harbour.

I still need to disambiguate some of the entries. One question we need to consider is: should there be separate articles for port and town when the town is named after the port e.g. Coffs Harbour, Port Augusta?

I'm a bit unsure what direction this page is going. People (and I'm probably the worst offender) are just adding links to articles and external sources and statements of ideals willy-nilly. If this is going to work, we need some structure. The to-do list should list articles to be created or expanded. Reference materials should list external and WP resources. There shouldn't be any overlap. There needs to be a single section stating aims and ideals. We don't need to restate editing policies that already exist in other WP policies. Hello- I am currently tryign to increase the importance of the Lady Elizabeth (1869) page. The Lady Elizabeth played an important role in Australias history by bring immigrants from many different ports and other valuables and cargo. One problem I am having is accessing Lloyds List on the Lady Elizabeth. Currently there is no picture of the ship from what I have seen but I am still digging. I am also having problems with accessing information from the shipbuilders with hope of getting some more information, registration, and possibly build photos. Any advice is well apreciated. It appears to me that File:Green Cape, 1917.jpg is the same photograph as File:Green Cape, 1902.jpg, but cropped, grey-scaled, and adjusted contrast. However, they are tagged as two different years. I really have to run so a quick response. The images both have a source link from where I took them. Follow those links and you should get the origin of the year data. Back from vacation, I had time to look at it. As I said, both images have links to the source repository, but it seems they no longer completely work, so one needs to know how these repositories work to actually get to the data.

• File:Green Cape, 1917.jpg is from the National Archives of Australia, barcode number 4746690, part of a series of photoes commons:Category:Images from the National Archives of Australia series A6247. I believe the entire series is dated 1917, and this is what the database has to say about it:

"This series is a collection of glass plate negatives, of both original negatives and copy negatives which display high contrast or high densities associated with low contrast.

The material has been poorly processed and stored, resulting in deterioration of the plates. They have been repackaged and stored following advise from the Australian Archives conserator. The negatives have been copied on to direct duplicating film by the Australian War Memorial and are held by the Marine Operations Division of the Department.

The plates contain a historic record of Australian coastal lighthouses from about 1917."

• File:Green Cape, 1902.jpg is from the State Library of NSW, and is from a series of photos commons:Category:Images from the State Library of NSW Searcy albums. As the image (before cropping) showed, the year 1902 was written in pencil on the bottom. The actual series in the repository is called "Searcy albums : Lighthouses in New South Wales, 1902.

So that's why there are different dates. Personally, I'd go for 1902, based on more accurate dating, but all one can really do in such a case is report what the source says, I presume. I hope this helps. --Muhandes (talk) 17:18, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

Our first Australian conference for Wikipedians/Wikimedians will be held 3-5 October 2015. Organised by Wikimedia Australia, there will be a 2-day conference (Saturday 3 October and Sunday 4 October) with an optional 3rd day (Monday 5 October) for specialist topics (unconference discussions, training sessions, etc). The venue is the State Library of Queensland in Brisbane. So put those dates in your diary! Note: Monday is a public holiday is some states but not others. As part of that page, there are now sections for you to:

• indicate your interest in possibly attending the conference (this is not a binding commitment, of course)
• add suggestions for topics to include in the conference: what you would like to hear/discuss (again, there is no commit to you presenting/organising that topic, although it’s great if you are willing to do so), or indicate your enthusiasm for any existing topic on the list by adding a note of support underneath it

It would really help our planning if you could let us know about possible attendance and the kind of topics that would make you want to come. If you don’t want to express your views on-wiki, please email me at [email protected] or [email protected]

We are hoping to have travel subsidies available to assist active Australasian Wikipedians to attend the conference, although we are not currently in a position to provide details, but be assured we are doing everything we can to make it possible for active Australian Wikipedians to come to the conference. We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? Hi WikiProject Australian Maritime History,

The Lloyd’s Register Foundation, Heritage & Education Centre have just uploaded 5005 documents from our Ship Plan and Survey Report Collection to Wikimedia Commons that may be of interest of you as many of our documents relate to Australian ports and maritime history. The ingestion is comprised of 16 boxes and accounts for 1082 ships across 184 unique places of build.

The documents include original handwritten correspondence from Lloyd's Register surveyors, ship plans and even a small selection of photographs. Examples include an annual report for Fiery Cross, a wreck report for Highwave, and cabin plan for the City of Simla.

In addition to the Ship Plan and Survey Report Collection, we are also beginning to ingest every edition of the Lloyd’s Register of Shipping until 1909 as well as a percentage of the First and Famous Collection, the world’s most iconic ships from within our collection. We will be sure to keep you updated on the progress of this next step.

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Quality assessments are used by Wikipedia editors to rate the quality of articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project decides to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Today I took an image (see File:Remnants of the HMAS Otama at the Australian Marine Complex, Henderson, Western Australia, December 2023 01.jpg) which I presume to be the inner core of what is left of the HMAS Otama, which was being dismantled at the location. I can't be 100% sure however, never having seen the inner core of a submarine before. If anybody here has a bit more insight, can they please have a look and let me know if I have identified the image correctly. Calistemon (talk) 04:27, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
