English: Front and western side of the Carthage Jail , located at the intersection of Walnut and Fayette Streets in Carthage , Illinois , United States . Here was killed the founder of Mormonism, Joseph Smith, Jr. . The building is now owned by the LDS Church and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
