A notice indicates the construction date of the church is unknown. It is one of 10 Syriac churches in Diyarbakir. It’s claimed to be a transformation of a larger people’s temple for the sun (Şenmsi). Arches with lotus-palmet decoration in the abscissa place that in the late Roman Age. A door at the north side is from the Byzantine period. The building has suffered many fires and other demolitions, but has been restored in 2004-5.
