Summary
Description IowaBlackenedTurret.jpg | Crew members man the rails aboard the battleship USS Iowa (BB-61) as the ship returns to home port following an explosion which killed 47 crew members. The explosion occurred in the No.2 16-inch gun turret as the Iowa was conducting routine gunnery exercises approximately 300 miles northeast of Puerto Rico on April 19th. Behind them the damaged turret still faces to the starboard and the gun barrels are blackened from the explosion.
